HOUSTON — The Yankees had their eight-game winning streak snapped on Sunday, falling to the Astros 7-4. They fall to 18-10 on the season. They still won the series in Houston, so that is a positive.

The negative — Luis Gil can't be on the Yankees MLB roster much longer.

Pitching Spotlight

Gil was not good at all today. It was clear following the outing that his start against the Red Sox was the exception, not the rule, to Gil as a pitcher. Sunday, he struggled against the powerful Houston lineup. He gave up two home runs in the outing, both of them two run shots, and struggled with his command.

Gil did not strike out a batter in the outing and generated just three swings and misses out of 83 pitches thrown.

It got to the point in the outing where he was throwing so many pitches in the third inning that the Yankees bullpen was up and ready to come in.

Hitting Spotlight

The Yankees offense fell flat today against Spencer Arrighetti. Across five innings, the Yankees accumulated three base-runners—one hit, one walk, one hit by pitch. Arrighetti is a very good pitcher and this stuff happens, but contrast that with what Gil did on the mound, it was a tough watch today.

The Yankees offense in Houston today was Aaron Judge, who blasted a solo home run in the sixth inning to give the Yankees their lone run.

The Astros made some nice defensive plays that affected the Yankees ability to mount a rally in the game.

The Yankees made it interesting in the ninth inning, scoring three runs, but a sharp line out off the bat of Caballero ended the game. It was good to see the Yankees not die in the ninth inning and make the game closer than it was in actuality.

Notable

Jazz Chisholm is 1-for-7 on ABS challenges in 2026. That can't happen. The ABS can be so valuable late in games, and players like Chisholm and Caballero costing the Yankees challenges can't fly much longer. It might be April, but the precedent needs to be sent for the rest of the season and into the more important games coming up.

Also notable that the Yankees will make a decision about a potential IL stint for Giancarlo Stanton before tomorrow's game against the Rangers.

What's Next

The Yankees will head to Arlington to take on the Texas Rangers. Following the loss, Max Fried will get the start. The Rangers will send Jack Leiter to the mound. The game will be at 8:05pm on YES network.
