The 2026 NHL Winter Classic wasn’t just another game on the schedule. It turned into a historic collision of ice and palm trees that felt more like a Hollywood premiere than a mid-season matchup. As the New York Rangers took the ice at loanDepot Park in Miami, they weren’t just battling the back-to-back champion Florida Panthers –they were defending a flawless legacy on the NHL’s biggest outdoor stages. The Rangers defeated the Panthers 5-1, with Mika Zibanejad recording the first ever Winter Classic Hat Trick.
Zibanejad and Panarin Lead the Charge
On the ice, the Rangers’ stars didn’t let the tropical heat slow them down. After a three-game losing skid, New York’s offense finally ignited behind its veteran leaders:
- Zibanejad silenced the Miami crowd early, putting the Rangers on the board late in the first period before eventually finishing with five points (three goals, two assists). This performance broke the NHL record for the most points ever recorded in an outdoor game.
- Artemi Panarin proved just as lethal, following Zibanejad’s lead with two goals of his own, including a back-breaking power-play tally in the third period that pushed the lead to 4–1. Zibanejad would complete the hatrick to make it 5-1.
The Legacy Continues
Despite a desperate third-period push from Florida that saw Sam Reinhart finally beat Igor Shesterkin on the power play, the Rangers’ defense held firm. The 5–1 victory improved the Rangers to a staggering 6–0 all-time in outdoor games, solidifying their status as the most dominant “open-air” team in hockey history.
