ST. LOUIS — Instant Reaction to the Yankees crazy win in St. Louis and winning back-to-back series for the first time since the end of May and improving to 66-57 on the season.
- The Yankees got to a quick start off Sonny Grey with Judge doubling home Grisham who lead off the game with a single. Dominguez would hit a 1-out single to add another run, but strikeouts of Volpe and McMahon would strand the runners in scoring position.
- Max Fried came out and was not sharp today. Though the run in the first inning was a result of a misplay by Dominguez, the rest was not. After walking the leadoff batter, Fried would give up three consecutive hits — including a three-run home run to Mayson Winn, surrendering the lead. Fried has been struggling since July 1st, posting a 7.03 ERA in that timeframe.
- Aaron Judge would try and get the Yankees back into the game with a solo home run in the third inning, the first in his career against Cardinals pitching, and he has homered against all 29 other teams in Baseball.
- The Yankees would regain the lead after Caballero hit a bunt single, followed by a single by Grisham and the big blow was a three-run home run by Ben Rice — who needs to be in the lineup every day.
- Ben Rice would add on some more runs with a bases-clearing double in the sixth inning. Rice hit the ball really well all night
- Aaron Boone kept Max Fried out for the sixth inning — despite his struggles. He allowed a double and a two-run homer to end his night. He tied a career-high in runs allowed with seven. The Yankees need to do something to correct his July struggles, and are lucky their offense exploded to still give Fried a win.
- It seemed that every time Fried gave up some runs, the offense added more. This time, it was Ryan McMahon with his first home run as a Yankee. The Yankees would add two more runs on a RBI single by Rice and a sac fly by Jazz, and that would be enough to get the job done.
- Devin Williams came out in the sixth inning in relief of Fried and he struck out the side. Medium leverage seems to work for Williams.
- Yerry De Los Santos pitched scoreless seventh and eight innings. The Yankees defense have turned five double plays so far in St. Louis.
- Mark Leiter Jr. came out for the ninth inning and put the tying run in the on deck circle, after a solo homer from Padro Pages and two infield singles with two outs. David Bednar came out and threw three pitches to secure the win and the series victory.
- The Yankees top three tonight carried the offense, driving in 10 of the 12 runs, including four hits from Grisham, three hits by Rice and two extra-base hits — including a homer — from Judge. If these three can get hot, watch out.
